Your One Word!

Many scrappers have adopted the concept of the “one little word” for each year. This is the one word that each person chooses to focus on in her life for one year. Ali Edwards started her annual tradition in 2007. There is even a challenge blog (now closed) focused on this concept of the “one little word”.
I’d like you to choose a word and scrap your page with *LARGE* type as the main design element of your page.

Dare Flares:

-Use a thick chunky font and make your one word HUGE.
-Use at least one photo and fit it into your word in a creative way.
-Use at least three colors on your layout.
-Incorporate journaling on why you chose that word and its importance to you.

I cannot believe that 2010 is here! Well, January is almost over for that matter!! Time is just flying by so fast. For my dare, I want you to scrap about what you accomplished or wished you could have accomplished in the past year. Seeing as how both my older childrens’ birthdays were the 26th and 27th, I want to see 2 curly ribbons. My DD turned 12 (say what?!!!!) and DS is now 10!!! There is 2 years between them so let’s do another 2 and use 2 alphas!! I cannot wait to see where this inspiration takes you!!

Don’t you just love to read those ‘Dear Abby’ advice columns? Often found in women’s magazines and newspapers, and even on the net. Well, I do! Sometimes just for a laugh, sometimes for the interesting and funny answers. My favorite is Social Q’s from the New York Times. So how about I dare you to write such a letter asking for advice on anything and then answering it yourself.

Dare flairs:
Use a letter or notepaper/notebook, you need something to write on, don’t you?
I want to see at least three different fasteners (staples, paperclips, stitches, tape etc).
Use a typewriter or handwritten font.
And since I’m old-fashioned, everything went through snail mail, so I need to see an envelope somewhere on your page.

Change is inevitable. But “change” in its own right is not something I deal with very well. Even changes that totally benefit me can send me straight into a fetal position. Why is that??? Hahaha.

I would like to see a layout that portrays change in your life and what it means to you. How does it impact you? Do you welcome it? Do you seek it out? Do you hide from it? Do you react to it at all? How does its impact on you affect those around you? Dig deep. Be honest. Think back (or ahead) and really focus on your thought process. Focus on what you may have learned from change or any tendencies you may have when change is taking place around you. Then, boldly express that in a layout.

Dare Flares:

• You must include a title and some type of journaling.
• You may use however many photos you like… even ZERO. (*Personal and stock photos are acceptable.)
• Use at least one clipping mask. (clip paper or photo… or simply use as is)
• Use at least on ink, glitter, or paint spatter.

2009 was a memorable year for us. It was a year of getting used to being together, both of us working at home, being underfoot of each other, yet having the ability and freedom to travel at will. It took some work, it still takes some work to balance the power and peache in our household. That was our first full year of you being home. And then the next major change that I am in denial about is that Marti has left our group of scrapbooking friends, as Kristin did too, moving South. We are still in touch on Facebook so it seems like she is not far, like I said I am in denial. Facebook has changed my life a lot this past year, for the better, bringing me full circle with my childhood friends. I wish for balance.

Journaling: I was totally humiliated in class when the teacher announced to everyone that I failed due to carelessness, our first assignment junior year, Michigan State Interior Design. She asked to see me in her office to explain myself. Well, that didn’t happen again. In fact, my final project for her class was so inventive that she submitted it to Interior Design Magazine and they published it August 1992, title of the article: “Student Work: A Portfolio of Universal Design Projects”, which can still be found online.

Journaling: On June 11, 1993, I graduated from Ohio State with a double-degree in Psychology and Accounting. I had an accounting job offer in hand already, and I was ready for the next chapter of my life. I would have never thoughtof majoring in Accounting and being successful at it, if not for the heartbreak of being told that I wasn’t a good Psych. research assistant two years prior to graduation. I was all ready to go to grad school in Psychology until Dr. Damarin told me that my research was too slow. I was so
sad at the time, but it led me to Accounting & Finance and I’ve never looked back.

Dare #158 Ghost of Christmas Past

We are going to go way back in time for this one! Use this http://www.random.org/integers/ to choose a year in your past. Set the first number to the year you were born and the second number to 1999. I got the year 1988 the first time, which I don’t remember, so I tried again and got 1980.

Now, think back to December of that year. Write down everything you can remember about that time, then turn it into journaling for your layout. Journaling should fill at least 1/4 of the page.

Since we are talking about the past, make your page look old!

For extra holiday flair, throw in some glitter.

Alright – it’s dare time!

Non-traditional!

This time of year is SO nostalgic for me. I have so many wonderful memories of my childhood during the Holidays. There are the typical memories of finding the perfect Christmas tree, listening to holiday music, making gingerbread houses … but there are so many more obscure memories as well!

This week I want you to think of a non-traditional holiday memory you have from your childhood (or even a more recent year if you wish)!

Here are some examples of my own non-traditional memories:

• Traditional would be decorating the tree as a family. Everyone does that. Non traditional would be that our family eats frozen peaches for breakfast on Christmas every year.
• Traditional would be singing Christmas carols. Non traditional would be the funny way my dad sings a particular Christmas song every year.
• Traditional would be opening presents Christmas morning. Non-traditional would be the year my parents actually put coal in my stocking.

Dare Flair:

• If you don’t have a photo of the event, it’s ok to use no photos or stock photos.
• Since we’re talking about non-traditional memories, let’s go with some non-traditional colors as well! No red or green allowed!
• Let’s see some white space! Your photo(s) & elements can only cover 1/4 of your layout. Journaling, however, can cover as much space as you want.
• You must use at least one swirl brush
• You must use some fabric of some sort (felt, fabric, ribbon)

it was the first (and only) blizzard of the year…and it just happened to be Christmas Eve. We had plans to drive to Grandma and Grandpa’s house, but the roads were just too bad. We hadn’t done any food shopping for the week yet and everything was closed. The only place open in town was a convenience store. We stocked up on burritos and chips and made the most of our Christmas Dinner. It’s a memory we will never forget!

Journaling:
It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.
Actually, it was really just the worst of times. We took Shannon to Michigan to spend
Christmas with Nana and PawPaw. Steve and his family were coming too, but Steve came down with the flu, and he still insisted on coming. That’s right, we all got it,
and it was UGLY. We had to drive home to Cincinnati on Christmas Eve. Fortunately, nobody puked in the car until we pulled into our garage. We even needed to evict
the neighbor’s family who were using our house while we were gone. It was just HORRIBLE. It was the WORST CHRISTMAS EVER!

My childhood memories are quickly fading away as I grow older.
One Christmas really stands out because it was the last Christmas that I believed
in Santa. I remember that my brothers both got matching Steelers coats and hats.
I got a pink one. I also got this huge dollbaby with black hair too. She was the very
first gift I saw!!! There were tons more but these are the things that I remember. It was
the last Christmas that I felt part of a family.

When I was growing up, my parents didn’t want us sneaking downstairs to check out our gifts on Christmas morning until they were up and ready to go down with us. Their solution?  They wrapped toilet paper across the banister at the top of the stairs.

We’ve carried on this “tradition” with our family now and we tape  toilet paper across the hallway so the kids can’t check out their goodies until we’re all ready to go out there as a family.  It’s so much fun to watch all of them break through the TP to run to all of the presents waiting for them under the Christmas tree!
